Entrevista a DatA

Y seguimos con cosas del pasado... esta vez nos tenemos que remontar a principios de mes, cuando, aprovechando que DatA actuaba en el festival MS-20 de Vilanova y La Geltrú (Barcelona), le propusimos hacerle unas preguntillas rápidas. El caballero aceptó y nos encontramos con él en el recinto del festival rodeados de algo de ruido de fondo, un buen ambiente carnavalesco y la música de la sesión de Featurecast de fondo.
Dado que el audio del video que grabamos era un poco mediocre, nos ha costado transcribir la entrevista literalmente, pero pese a ello, hemos conseguido ejercitar la memoria para recordar qué nos contó este muchacho de 22 años antes de que pudieramos disfrutar de una sesión llena de hitazos.

Why DatA? Why the capital A at the end?
¿Por qué DatA? ¿Por qué la A final está en mayúsculas?
There is the fist D capital, the last A capital and it's like to close the word, a beginning and an end, but it's esthetic, there is no meaning.
Hay una D inicial en mayúsculas y la A final en mayúsculas, porque así parece que se cierra la palabra, un principio y un final, pero es estético, no tiene significado.


How do you feel in Ekler'o'shock (Danger, Terry Poison...)? You are kinda asset for this label.
¿Cómo te encuentras en Ekler'o'shock (Danger, Terry Poison...)? Eres una especie de estandarte de ese sello.
It's great because that's my label, kind of friends, small, and there I make my music, I can make it how I really want, I don't have the pressure of a big label. If i want to change the snare, I change the snare, if I want to change the bongo, I change the bongo, and it's really good for me, because i'm really independent and i'm more free.
Es genial porque es mi sello, como amigos, pequeño, y hago mi música, la puedo hacer como quiera, no tengo la presión de un sello grande. Si quiero cambiar la caja, la cambio, si quiero cambiar el bongo, lo cambio, y es genial para mí, porque soy muy independiente y soy mucho más libre.

Any release soon?
¿Algún lanzamiento cercano?
Yes, i'm making my album, it's almost done, I have like two tracks to finish and i'm going to release the first vocal single in one month and a half and then one or two more vocal tracks. The whole album has instrumental, club and vocal tracks.
Sí, estoy haciendo mi álbum, ya está casi hecho, faltan por terminar un par de canciones y lanzaré el primer single cantado en un mes y medio (la entrevista se hizo el 1 de febrero) y luego un par de canciones más. El álbum entero tiene parte instrumental, más club y pistas cantadas.

Is it gonna be similar to your last works?
¿Se parece a tus anteriores trabajos?
No, no, no, the single is more pop, more radio, it's like "Maniac".

What about being in Kitsuné Maison 5? You appear twice!
¿Qué nos cuentas de tu aparición en el Kitsuné Maison 5? Apareces por partida doble!
It's very great, it's very great, because the owner of Kitsuné, Gildas, e-mailed me and told me that he loved my music. After that he wrote on NME Mag that i was one of his fav electronic producers. It's great because Kitsuné is a very big label and they touch a lot of kinds of music, there is not a headline, they just get good music.
Es genial, es genial, porque el propietario de Kitsuné, Gildas, me mandó un mail diciéndome que le encantaba mi música. Después de eso escribió en NME Mag que yo era uno de sus productores favoritos. Es genial porque Kitsuné es un sello muy grande y ellos tocan cualquier tipo de música, no hay una limitación o algún estilo que vaya en cabeza, sólo seleccionan buena música.

Would you like them to release your work?
¿Te gustaría que lanzaran ellos tus trabajos?
Yes, well, they offered me to release a 12" vinyl, but I can't because I signed with Ekler'o'shock.
Sí, bueno, me ofrecieron lanzar un 12" pero no pude, porque ya habia firmado con Ekler'o'shock.

Oh yes, I really like, to be true, the first album, L'Incroyable Verité, because he was making this album in his appartment, and his appartmen was small, and because of the neighborhood he could make no drums, and it's music with no drums, I really think it's a great album, but to be true, I listened to the new album and I didn't like it, it's like "I don't understand what's happening."
Oh sí, me gusta, para ser sinceros, el primer álbum, L'incroyable Verité, porque hizo ese álbum en su apartamento, y era pequeño, y por culpa de los vecinos no podía tocar percusión, así que es música sin percusión, creo que realmente es un gran álbum. Pero a decir verdad, escuché el último disco y no me gustó, es como "no entiendo qué está pasando".

What do you think about the new wave of french electro leaded by Ed Banger and similar? Do you think it's just a mod?
¿Qué opinas sobre la nueva ola de electro francés encabezado por Ed Banger y similares? Crees que sólo es una moda?
No, I don't think it's just a mod that it's gonna die. I'm proud that Justice are french because they're the better influence for a lot of people, like another bands that influenced me, so it's good. I think it's more than a fashion, a hype, because i still listen to what I consider my influences and i'm not going to stop doing it, so an influence doesn't die.
No, no creo que sea sólo una moda que vaya a morir. Estoy orgullos de que Justice sean franceses y que sean la mejor influencia para un montón de gente, como otras bandas me han influenciado a mí, así que es bueno. Creo que es más que una moda o un "hype", porque yo aún escucho lo que considero influencias y no voy a dejar de hacerlo, una influencia no muere.

There is a band I really love, if I had a record label I would sign them: Pacific!. They're on the label Moshi Moshi, and it's a pop band, they are two guys from somewhere in Scandinavia.
Hay una banda que me realmente me encanta, si tuviera un sello discográfico los ficharía: Pacific!. Están en el sello Moshi Moshi y es una banda de pop, son dos chicos de algún lugar de Escandinavia.

Could you tell us some tracks for a perfect dj set?
¿Nos puedes nombrar algunas canciones para un dj set perfecto?
