Con un disco en el mercado lanzado el pasado mayo lograron meterse a la crítica en el bolsillo con su estilo más de una vez comparado con The Postal Service. Un synth-pop bonito, alegre, tranquilo y en ocasiones hasta bailable que ha llegado a enganchar con su Folder a más de un DJ de prestigio. Mathieu Gendreau (canadiense) y Pieter van Dessel (belga) aceptaron contestar a unas preguntitas y nosotros nos disponemos a compartirlas con vosotros unos días después de su lanzamiento del Different Places en Japón, con dos remixes como bonustracks, Peppermint remezclado por los fantásticos belgas Shameboy y el remix de Jesse Rosse y Oliver $ para el Why don't you.

Presentaros a nuestros lectores. Quién es Plastic Operator?

Pieter: Plastic Operator is Mathieu and me. We have some guests on the album. Tara Thompson sings a few bits and Sarah Ferri sings on "Parasols". We have Barbara and Dominique Peynsaert, and Olivier Demers playing strings. Mathieu Bouchard shreds away a guitar solo on "Another Sound". But when we compose and play live, it is just the two of us.

Pieter: Plastic Operator somos Mathieu y yo. Tenemos algunos invitados en el álbum: Tara Thompson canta algunos cachos y Sarah Ferri canta en "Parasols". Tenemos a Barbara y Dominique Peynsaert, y Olivier Demers tocando cuerdas. Mathieu Bouchard se marca un solo de guitarra en "Another Sound". Pero cuando componemos y actuamos sólo somos nosotros dos.

How did the project start?
¿Cómo empezó el proyecto?

Pieter: We did a course in Audio Production together in London. One of the assignments was to remix a track. Mathieu remixed on of my songs I just made at that time. It was called "Couch" and ended up on the album too. We both liked it so much that we decided to make tracks together. When we sat together behind the laptop for the first time we made "Folder". And when BBC Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank released it on his Sunday Best label the ball started rolling...

Pieter: Hicimos un curso en Producción de Audio juntos en Londres. Una de las tareas era remezclar una canción. Mathieu remezcló una de las canciones que yo había hecho. Se llamaba "Couch" y acabó en el álbum. Nos gustó tanto que decidimos hacer canciones juntos. Cuando nos sentamos juntos detrás del ordenador por primera vez hicimos "Folder". Y cuando Rob da Bank, el dj de la BBC Radio1 lo lanzó en su Sunday Best, la bola empezó a dar vueltas...

What influences Plastic Operator? Not Only music, but things in the world.
¿Qué influencia a Plastic Operator? No sólo música, sino cosas en el mundo.

-Pieter: Each song starts with a little hum or a cool groove that comes out of the blue and that little bit inspires you to make the rest of the song. The inspiration for the lyrics comes out of our imagination. A lot of lyrics in dance music is inspired by night life - you know, songs about "dancing all night" and "let the party begin" - but most of the times that doesn't work for me so I try to avoid it. "Another sound" is tongue in cheek in that.
Mathieu: I watch a lot of films and read books. I think that inspiration comes from all those things that your brain takes in.

Pieter: Cada cancion empieza con un tarareo o un groove que sale y eso te inspira a hacer el resto de la canción. La inspiración de las letras llega desde la imaginación. Un montón de letras en la música de baile está inspirada en la vida nocturna - ya sabes, canciones sobre "bailar toda la noche" y "que empiece la fiesta" - pero la mayoría de veces no funciona en mi caso, así que intento evitarlo. "Another sound" trata ese tema con ironía.
Mathieu: Veo un montón depelis y leo libros. Creo que la inspiración llega de todo lo que entra en tu cerebro.

Different places is a really complete album, not just your single Folder and 10 more tracks. Which are your favourite ones?
Different places es un álbum realmente completo, no salemente el single Folder y 10 canciones más. ¿Cuáles son vuestras favoritas?

Pieter: Peppermint is definitely one of my favourite one. I like The Long Run too. It's one of the last songs we wrote for the album and it's a nice ending for the album to me. And I'm still proud of Folder. Not only because I still like the song, but because it appeals to so many people. No matter how old and no matter which genre they're into. Not only electronica lovers like it. My little niece loves it, my mother too.
Mathieu: Home 0207 is my favorite. But it does change from day to day. I think Singing all The Time will do very well too, once we release the remixes. It’s a great tune.

Pieter: Peppermint es definitivamente una de mis favoritas. Me gusta The Long Run también. Es una de las últimas canciones que escribimos para el álbum y es un buen final para el álbum, para mí. Y aún estoy orgulloso de Folder. No sólo porque aún me guste, sino porque hace referencia a mucha gente. No importa la edad ni género. No le gusta sólo a los amantes de la electrónica. Mi sobrinita lo adora y mi madre también
Mathieu: Home 0207 es mi favorita. Pero depende del día. Creo que Singing All The Time también pinta bien una vez lancemos los remixes. Es un buen tema.

What about your collaboration with !!Booka Shade!! How did the idea born?
¿Qué tal vuestra colaboración con ¡Booka Shade!? Cómo nació la idea?

Mat: It all started when Pieter was messing around in a rehearsal, playing guitar and singing on top of the Booka Shade record. We thought it was pretty funny and plugged a mic to our laptop to record the vocal. A few minutes later we had the infamous BS vs PO mashup! We played the track in a few clubs and were amazed to see the reaction on the dancefloor - often seeing the whole dancefloor singing along to the Tom Petty anthem. We couldn't believe the amazing vibe it created in the room. During the following days we then sent the mp3 to a few DJ friends just for a laugh. It snowballed into something much bigger than what we had anticipated and the song is now playing in major clubs around the world. Even Booka Shade plays it in their DJ sets.

Mat: Todo empezó cuando Pieter estaba liándola en un ensayo, tocando la guitarra y cantando encima del disco de Booka Shade. Pensamos que quedaba guay y enchufamos un micro al portatil para grabar las voces. Unos minutos depsués tuvimos el infame mashup BS vs PO! Tocamos el tema en algunos clubs y nos encantó ver la reacción en la pista - a menudo viendo la pista de baile cantando el himno de Tom Petty-. No podíamos creer el ambiente que creó en la sala. Durante los días después, le mandamos el mp3 a unos amigos DJ's para echar unas risas. Y fue creciendo y creciendo, hasta que nos contaron que estaba sonando en grandes clubs de todo el mundo. Hasta Booka Shade lo pincha en sus sets.

What do you think about the comparation with The Postal Service?
¿Qué opináis de la comparación con The Postal Service?

Pieter: A part of me understands the link: we both make melodic songs with electronic arrangements. But I see a lot of differences too. We are more dancy and less glitchy. Actually I am surprised to see The Postal Service reference. I think we have more in common with bands like Hot Chip or New Order than the Postal Service. But you know, I like the Postal Service, so I see it as a compliment.
Mathieu: I hadn’t heard about The Postal Service until everybody started telling us that we sounded like them. A friend of mine even bought their album for me and I finally listened to their music. I can see that it is similar laptop music but our songs are quite different and more straight forward.

Pieter: Una parte de mí entiened el enlace: los dos hacemos canciones melódicas con arreglos electrónicos. Pero veo un montón de diferencias también. Somos más bailables y menos técnicos. De hecho me sorprende que vean a The Postal Service como una referencia. Creo que tenemos más en común con bandas como Hot Chip o New Order que con Postal Service. Pero bueno, me gusta The Postal Service, así que lo veo como un cumplido.
Mathieu: No había oído hablar de The Postal Service hasta que todo elmundo empezó a contarnos que sonábamos como ellos. Un amigo incluso me compró su disco y escuché su música. Veo que hay música de pc similar, pero nuestras canciones son algo diferentes y más directas.

(Patric Watson y Malajube son dos bandas de Montreal que hay que tenerles el ojo encima. Y espero más de Au Revoire Simone, tres chicas de Brooklyn.)
